Species Name:
Velithra Noctis
(Common Name: Veilrunner Wolf)
Veilrunner Wolves of Dracoforge
In the quiet, hidden corners of Verdantforge, where ancient roots twist deep into the earth and the veil between realms thins like morning mist, there exists a creature few have ever truly seen. Only glimpsed, like a flicker between heartbeats. The Veilrunner Wolf.
Description
Small in stature, no larger than a house cat. The Veilrunner Wolf appears almost too delicate to survive in the wilds of Dracoforge. Its soft, pale fur blends seamlessly with fog, moonlight, and frost touched undergrowth. Its most striking feature, however, is its large, glossy eyes, which seem to reflect not just light, but distance. As if they are always looking somewhere far beyond the present world. Their paws are silent, their presence lighter than falling ash, and their tails flicker with subtle distortions. Like reality itself struggles to fully hold them in place.
The Veil
Veilrunners are not bound entirely to the physical world. They possess the rare and mysterious ability to traverse the Veil. A thin, unseen layer that exists between places. With focus and calm, a Veilrunner can step into this hidden space and reappear up to one mile away in an instant. But this gift is fragile. A Veilrunner must be calm, focused, and physically healthy to traverse the Veil. Fear, injury, or exhaustion disrupts their concentration. A panicked Veilrunner becomes grounded. Unable to escape even the simplest danger. Because of this, their survival depends not on strength, but on awareness and harmony.
Behavior
Veilrunner Wolves are not aggressive, but they are deeply cautious creatures. They observe long before they act. They travel in small packs of three or more, never alone unless separated. Packs maintain constant, subtle awareness of one another even across distance through faint, almost telepathic instincts tied to the Veil. When threatened, they prefer to disappear rather than fight. However, if cornered, they will defend themselves with surprising speed and precision. To approach a Veilrunner is nearly impossible. Even sensing intent can cause them to vanish.
Diet
Their diet is simple but efficient, small burrowing rodents, river fish and shallow stream catches They are often seen near water sources at dawn or dusk, though rarely for long.
Habitat
Most commonly found in the deepest regions of Verdantforge, where ancient magic lingers. Mist-covered forest floors and areas where the boundary between the physical world and the Veil is thin.
Rarity & Sightings
Seeing a Veilrunner Wolf is considered a moment of quiet fortune. Most who claim to have seen one describe, a soft shape at the edge of vision. A pair of shining eyes in the brush and a sudden absence where something should have been. Tracks are almost never found. Sound is almost never heard.
Role in Dracoforge
Veilrunners are believed to be keepers of balance between worlds. Some scholars and dragon sages believe they help stabilize the Veil itself. Their movement prevents tears between realms. Where Veilrunners thrive, the land remains calm and undisturbed. Dragons of Verdantforge are known to respect their presence, never hunting them, and in rare cases, even allowing them to travel nearby without alarm.
